Remi has a habit of falling asleep in the middle of things.

Not after things. In the middle.

I’ve found him asleep with a toy still between his paws. I’ve watched him slowly melt into a couch cushion while chewing on something he seemed deeply committed to thirty seconds earlier.

One moment he’s fully invested in the task at hand.

The next moment he’s asleep.

No announcement. No planning. No dramatic conclusion.

Just… asleep.

Rio approaches the situation a little differently.

He doesn’t usually fall asleep accidentally. He simply decides he’s done.

He’ll climb onto the couch, circle once, settle into his spot, and close his eyes as though the decision required no further discussion.

I’ve always found that fascinating.

Neither dog seems to spend much time negotiating with their own tiredness.

They don’t appear to hold internal meetings about whether now is the right time to stop. They don’t promise themselves they’ll rest after one more thing. They don’t seem especially concerned with whether they’ve earned it.

They just seem to trust that whatever they’re doing can wait.

The toy will still be there.

The couch isn’t going anywhere.

The world can continue turning for an hour or two without their direct involvement.
